Choosing a Freestanding Tub

Having a dreamy bathtub is becoming a must-have for homeowners. Thankfully, freestanding tubs or soaker tubs are much more accessible ($-$$$) than they once were. However, buying any tub is still a big decision, so consider the following before choosing a freestanding tub.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FIT:

Are you remodelling your entire bathroom or are you replacing the bathtub you already have and keeping the same layout? It’s important to consider the space that you’re working with and choose an appropriately sized freestanding tub. Here’s a few questions to consider when looking at bathtubs:

  1. Do you want ample space to move around the tub or clean? Does your tub have to be flush against a wall?   2. Are you looking for a one person or two person tub? Thinking about this can also help you decide the orientation of your tub and where you might want the drain and the tub-filler to be situated.

If you’re looking for ultimate relaxation, make sure to look at the different ergonomic and design options. For example, if you’re looking for a two-person soaker, you might consider a double-elevated backrest.

INSTALLING A FREESTANDING TUB:

Before making a final decision, you’ll need to confirm installation details to ensure everything goes smoothly.

  1. Confirm what plumbing you’ll require for your selected tub (e.g. a centre drain, or a right-hand drain).
  2. Do you want a one or two-piece tub? Two-piece tubs consist of a skirt and the tub sits inside. The two-piece option is generally more flexible to install, more accommodating for tub-mounted faucets, and massage systems. However, if you’re looking for a very traditional look, you might consider a one-piece clawfoot or pedestal tub.
  3. Next you’ll need to consider what type of tub-filler you want (and there’s so many beautiful options – it’s a bit overwhelming!). A few common options are floor-mounted, deck-mounted, or wall-mounted tub fillers.
