Freestanding vs. Built-in bathtubs: Which style is right for you?

Both styles offer distinct advantages and cater to different aesthetic preferences, space constraints and budgets. Scroll to learn the pros and cons of each while choosing the right style for your bathroom!

A freestanding bathtub is a tub that stands alone and is not built into a surrounding structure or attached to any walls. These tubs can come in a variety of shapes, including oval rectangular, slipper style and clawfoot designs.

PROS:

Versatile placement - A freestanding tub can be placed anywhere with proper plumbing access because there is no need for wall support.

Wide variety of styles- Available in modern, vintage, and classic designs, offering more design flexibility.

Aesthetics- Create a spa-like, high end look that elevates a bathroom’s design

Easy installation- Require minimal structural changes and can be placed without the need of additional walls or framing.

CONS:

Takes up more space- This makes it less ideal for smaller bathrooms

Heavier- Some free standing tubs may need floor reinforcement

Less storage space- No surrounding ledges for toiletries and other items

More expensive- The tub itself and the fixtures needed are generally more expensive than built-in tubs

A built-in bathtub is designed to fit into a pre-constructed or recessed area, often with a tile or waterproof surrounding. These are most common in traditional homes.

CONS:

Less aesthetic appeal- Built-in tubs lack the elegance of freestanding options

Limited placement options- Must be installed against a wall

Longer Installation Process- Built-in tubs require more construction work, including framing and tiling
